At the Academy Awards in 1970, neither Best Actress Maggie Smith nor Best Supporting Actress Goldie Hawn were there to collect their prizes in person. But if the absence of the women of the hour rather dimmed the night’s star power, a certain Elizabeth Taylor, who did attend, more than did her part to make up for it – not least thanks to the enormous rock resting gently between her collarbones, framed perfectly by the deep neckline of her periwinkle gown. There to present the Oscar for Best Film (it went to Midnight Cowboy), the actor had accessorised her dress, the work of revered costume designer Edith Head, with the 69-carat Taylor Burton diamond.

Taylor and her husband Richard Burton had bought the now legendary stone the previous year – it was named for the famously tempestuous couple – and it set a bar for Oscar night jewellery that stars still aspire to live up to when getting dressed for the biggest red carpet of the year. Take the 128-carat (apologies, Liz) yellow Tiffany & Co. diamond that Lady Gaga wore in 2019, the year she was nominated for A Star is Born, or the $6 million-worth of Bulgari jewels Zendaya added to her Valentino gown to attend the Academy Awards two years later.
