14 Of The Best Night Creams For Mature Skin
Night creams are specifically formulated to help support skin’s natural repair systems overnight. That includes repairing any oxidative damage caused by free radicals during the day and increasing blood flow to deliver essential nutrients to skin. While this is beneficial to all skin types, it’s particularly important for mature skin that may be showing classic signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles and lack of firmness, and therefore may need a little more support.
“Mature skin typically undergoes several changes due to intrinsic ageing (natural ageing) and extrinsic (external) factors such as sun exposure, pollution, and lifestyle habits,” says consultant dermatologist Dr Rakesh Anand. “Common characteristics include reduced collagen and elastin leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging and decreased hydration as skin produces less hyaluronic acid and ceramides, resulting in dryness.’ According to Anand, mature skin is also thinner skin than younger skin which makes it more prone to fragility and slower wound healing, while uneven pigmentation with sunspots, age spots, or general dullness is also characteristic. It also tends to have a weakened barrier function, causing increased sensitivity and a greater tendency for irritation.
