Since her breakout role in Lady Macbeth back in 2016, Florence Pugh has never played it safe, both on screen and on the red carpet. This week was no different. For CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the actor teamed a white minidress by Stella McCartney with white heeled boots – an unexpected red-carpet pairing that caught our attention.

While Pugh’s lace-panelled dress tapped into the underwear as outerwear trend that simply won’t go away, Pugh was seemingly following the “wrong-shoe theory” with her choice of footwear. After all, it’s rare that you see boots on the red carpet.

Still, the days of boots being a strictly cold-weather affair are long gone. From the street-style set to the A-list, fashion’s favourite It-girls are wearing their boots right through spring, and not just as a practical alternative to six-inch heels. Far from being an afterthought, boots are no longer the supporting act or the safe option.

Whether styled with a classic trench or with a slip dress and bare legs, boots bring a sense of cool to spring’s more romantic leanings. Florence’s latest look is proof that the right pair of boots can do more than tie an outfit together – it’s your one-way ticket to understated cool.
