“I always tell the girls, never take it seriously. If you never take it seriously, you never get hurt,” Kate Hudson imparts as the OG manic pixie dream girl at the heart of the cult classic Almost Famous. And it seems Lily James is taking that advice to heart, stepping out in a Penny Lane coat, complete with effortless curls, to attend Elton John’s show at the London Palladium on Wednesday.

Joined by the likes of Ronnie Wood, Gala Gordon and John himself, James was the latest celeb to get on board with the one-and-done coat trend, joining the legions of It-girls who have been spotted in the season’s hottest ’70s-style outerwear. Fully embracing the boho revival – one that was heralded by the clinking of Paddington locks on Chloé’s runway – the actor has made it clear that she’s up for a dose of nostalgia.

It seems that James has a penchant for statement coats right now. For the Giorgio Armani show in Milan this month, she opted for another chocolate-brown number, this time in the form of a leather trench. “I think it’s the GOAT of all coats,” she told Vogue at the time. “The trench did all the talking; it was all about the coat today.”

The same could be said of her Penny Lane coat, which has had its fair share of celebrity endorsements in recent times. What’s the secret to its appeal? “They always feel timeless,” Charlotte Simone, the creator behind the London It-girl favourite, previously explained. “The Penny Lane coat has that nostalgic 1970s spirit that never dates.”
