From casting stellar line-ups of faces and personalities for her seasonal shows and campaigns, to partnering with a roster of brands, Miuccia Prada knows the power of a great collaboration. On the footwear front, the designer has explored creative unions with Church’s and New Balance – the latter of which debuted for spring/summer 2022.
Delving into the sportswear label’s archives, Ms. Prada reimagined the iconic 574 trainer, “emphasising construction through deconstruction” with frayed, raw-cut edges. Spring/summer 2023 and autumn/winter 2023 saw the 574 interpreted again in new fabrications and colourways, orchestrating a hype for Miu Miu X New Balance trainers that has since skyrocketed.
At her spring/summer 2024 show, Miuccia Prada debuted not one, but five key shoe shapes for the new season. First up: thong-toe sandals fashioned from colourful sailing cord and jewels, complete with poppy blister plasters. Then came Mary-Janes, with both low and high heels (some with contrast toe caps), leather and linen buckled shoes (made in collaboration with Church’s), boat shoes and her newest take on New Balance trainers.
This time, she updated the brand’s 530 running shoes, originally launched in 1992, crafted from new materials – including distressed suede, unprocessed suede and mesh – that gave them a fresh, super light quality. While they featured hallmarks of a traditional silhouette – sturdy soles, breathable uppers – they came with the same cord laces as the spring/summer 2024 sandals and the same leather laces as the boat shoes. Most recently, for autumn/winter 2024, the designer released the 530 in vintage-effect aged leather. Time will tell what shape she’ll Miu Miu-ify next.
