I Thought Ballet Sneakers Weren’t For Me – Until This Style Convinced Me Otherwise

When asked about my fashion weakness, I always reply: trainers. Given the choice, I usually opt for flat shoes anyway (loafers and clogs are also favourites), but sneakers are undoubtedly my go-to.

Interestingly, while I’ve found my personal style leans towards the minimalist when it comes to clothes – I rarely follow trends – things are different when it comes to sneakers, where I have a penchant for shopping the latest hot styles. In addition to Adidas Sambas and the Handball Spezial, Onitsuka Tiger’s Mexico 66 design are also part of my shoe-drobe – not only in the retro yellow version, but also in silver.

Given this weakness for trainer trends, it will probably come as no surprise that at the beginning of the year, I kept a close eye on the increasing popularity of sneaker ballerinas – not just for professional journalistic reasons, but also for very personal ones.

But the ballet sneakers never really convinced me. This was in spite of Puma’s new hybrid, the Speedcat ballerinas – based on the brand’s popular trainer style, which enjoyed a huge resurgence last year, after it was worn by the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Emily Ratajkowski. Most of the crossbreed models were simply too playful for me: too much ballerina and not enough sneaker.

Thankfully, my mind’s been changed by a new hybrid version of the trainer: the Speedcat Go. Currently available in red and black, the style features sporty mesh panels, along with lace detailing and a velcro strap that resembles a Mary-Jane flat. The overall effect is more casual than other sneaker ballet flat hybrids – perfectly matching my style.
