Barely a day goes by without this magazine mentioning a new trainer fad. Hybrid sneakers, colour-blocking styles… for news in footwear, you know you’ll hear it here first. The latest? Suede trainers which, in line with the broader rise of retro silhouettes, have become popular of late.
Miu Miu’s collaboration with New Balance has seen several reinterpretations of the sportswear giant’s key archive styles, including a directional take on the 530 – which were originally launched in 1992. Miuccia Prada gave them new life and crafted them from distressed suede, unprocessed suede and mesh, complete with cord laces. And, alongside this slimline running-inspired style, she’s also introduced mule versions of the 530, one of which boasts shearling lining.
Other fashion-forward suede trainers to consider for spring: Dries Van Noten’s similarly retro leather and suede sneakers, which take cues from “’70s marathon spirit”, available in enticing colourways like tan, blush and green, Toteme’s leather The Sports, which feature contrast top-stitching, The Row’s Owens, Bottega Veneta’s Orbits and Loewe’s Ballet Runners. And for true athletic styles, look to New Balance’s own-brand range – the 2002R, 991 and 574, among them – Adidas’s Gazelles and Nike’s iconic Cortez.
