Gigi Hadid was this week invited onto Jimmy Fallon’s sofa to promote Guest in Residence, the cashmere label she launched in 2022 that now has fans including Blake Lively. “It’s really so rewarding to see people wearing [the brand],” the model, who was not wearing the brand, said. Hadid instead chose Tom Ford: a half-buttoned shirt in ice blue leather with tailored boot cuts and Jimmy Choo pumps in a similarly glacial hue. The look merged the élan of Haider Ackermann with fashion’s latest name-it-and-it-must-be-a-thing-trend – sandwich dressing.

The sandwich method (a term coined by British influencer and stylist Lydia Tomlinson in 2022) refers to the pairing of two colour-coordinated items with a contrasting layer in the middle – and is, for reasons known only to the algorithm, currently proliferating on TikTok and Instagram Reels. There, between clips of people cutting pizza with scissors, sandwich dressing has been pitched as a shortcut to looking polished in seconds. This is, depending on the media you are served, either a “genius” hack that will “make all your outfits look 10 times better”, or a total diversion on the way to developing a style of your own.

Hadid, clearly, falls into the former. The sandwich method is, after all, a strategy she’s often relied on when stepping out in public. See: the oxblood Adidas X Wales Bonner Sambas paired with patchwork Nigel Xavier jeans and a matching Holzweiler jacket in February 2024; or the red-and-white striped Guest in Residence polo she styled with a black Lamarque Arcila skirt and coordinating Louboutin loafers that December. “As long as you love colour, then we’ve got you,” she told Fallon of her own brand. “It’s all about creating high-quality pieces that will last – something your daughters will take to college – that’s the dream.”
